Recently I have been researching mental health-related magazine articles to inspire ideas for my own. I have been looking at a mental health magazine founded in 2017 with a main team of just 3 people.
So far I have looked at two of their double-page spread articles, the first one about ADHD in adults. Firstly, the layout is colorful with a contrasting black-and-white photo of somebody's eye, portraying the idea of an enigma that something is wrong. It is branded with multiple headings including,' capitalizing on your strengths, and 'allow yourself to grieve what could've been'; both heading are very motivational and enlightening, which are also highlighted with colorful themes. Finally, I really like the use of the quote at the top of the page, which really draws the reader's attention away from the rest of the page.
The second article includes a section from social media influencer Joe Sugg. Joe has over 7 million subscribers on his main YouTube channel alone. I feel that using an influencer to talk about mental health issues contrasts with their real job which is to make people smile; this really helps the public realize they are not alone. Joe mainly talks about his addiction to his phone which has now become a mainstream, globalized issue.
The layout of the page isn't as colorful as the ADHD one but in fact, follows a specific Autumn-themed color palette. However, the article only contains one photo.
I really like the use of the autumn/fall color palette which is used. I also find it interesting how the use of a larger image draws the reader's attention from the two separate smaller images.
