Critical reflection essay

According to Steve Neale, codes and conventions ultimately convey the idea of documentaries such as interview formats, non-diegetic voiceovers, diegetic music, onscreen graphics, and the use of mise en scene. ‘Our Silent Emergency’ by Roman Kemp (2021), doubtlessly influenced my documentary in its use of conventions. Kemp tends to narrate the documentary through a non-diegetic voiceover, which is an element that I have adapted in mine. During my research on Bill Nicholls's six types of documentaries, I gained the inspiration to create a participatory documentary; I felt as if this subgenre of documentary perfectly matches the description of what I wanted to create. This led me to believe my documentary was participatory because it includes people in front of the camera and not just my experience with the topic such as performative documentaries.   Another convention in which I decided to research was editing   and the use of montage and juxtaposition. In my opinion...

Minor task: what influenced my magazine article?

Firstly, I researched many magazines which could relate my to my target audience such as Men's health and teen vogue. I finally found that the right magazine to base my article in is Men's Health. In my opinion Men's health has the closest and most direct correlation concerning my target audience and I feel I have made the right choice in this decision.  I decided to go to the library to look at an issue of Men's Health to determine the factors which will help me to publish my article in the magazine.   Today I decided to do some more rough footage, I really liked this footage. Soon I will be evaluating and deciding which footage to cut and which to cut.

Final task: rough footage

Today I decided to go and film some more footage for my final task, Overall I think the day was extremely successful and useful. I got lots of valuable shots that I will definitely use in my final task. I also got a large variety of different shots meaning I have a lot of choices. I will be posting another blog which is an evaluation of each shot that I took.

Final task: production update and plan

Every day during this half term I have been working on my final task and I have a clear plan set out for the filming of it. During Sunday and Monday, I plan to gather all the remaining establishing shots I need for my documentary. I plan to edit these before, in between, and after both interviews. In regards to filming the interviews, I plan to film them on both Wednesday and Thursday this week, therefore allowing me to have time to review and edit them. I am confident I will be able to finish gathering all my footage before the end of this week, and I am confident enough that I will have had enough time to do a first draft of an edit.  For the first interview, I plan to travel to Alexei's house for the interview, just like my preliminary task, however for my second interview I am still deciding where to film the interview, I am more pulled to the idea of filming it at my house as in the kitchen its very open and encourages open discussion, I also wouldn't have to travel to h...
